Research into filming roles

For my group and I’s project there will be a division of labour as this is a group project. Although we will all try each role as we are learning these skills in real time, we have all assigned ourselves roles that we will take charge of on set to avoid confusion and inefficiently on set.

There will be three main roles on set as there are three members of the group, they are as follows:

Director- The director takes creative control on set and helps to keep the vision of the film alive as the production process takes place. The directors' main function is to control the actors and make sure they deliver the scene as desired, as well as controlling the filming process by conducting the camera operators. On our set this role will be taken by Perdy

Camera Person- The camera person or operator oversees getting the shots and doing the actual filming, they set up the shots working closely with the director to create a cinematic experience for the audience, normally there would be many camera operators but as this is a small production, we only need one. This role will be done by Fred (ME)

Editor- The editor is in charge of combining the video and audio clips together in the postproduction process to create the finished product. They are in charge of adding any effects such as sound effects, CGI and graphics etc. Their role is important as their individual skill can determine the quality of the final version of the film. This role will be taken by Georgie

As the camera person/operator I will be filming most/all of the shots and be in charge of how those shots are composed, through using camera techniques such as the 180 degree rule, rule of thirds and others in order to correctly convey the genre and connotations attached to out sequence. In order to prepare for our shoot day I will go over some of the potential shots/angles that I can use to amplify meanings in our opening sequence. I will need to have a copy of the shot list with me to make sure that I do not miss any shots that we intended to get as well as the schedule so that I can relate these two documents to see if we are on time to get an idea of how the day is going.

My role is important as if some of the shots for example are not straight then it will affect the whole sequence, as I am responsible for the visual aspect of the filming and thus if I was to make mistakes it could severally affect the final product. There are a few challenges that I have been preparing for on the day of shooting, one of these being how to film inside the car. This is particularly challenging as there are already going to be two actors in the car and to get some shots, I will have to position myself is some strange angles and positions, this could be especially challenging as we will be unable to use the tripod so all shots within the car will be handheld.

I will use certain camera techniques to convey genre conventions such as low angle shots for example to make characters look powerful and of high Staus, this will also help to engage the target audience these conventions convey certain connotations attached to the genre that are consistent with similar products, therefore buy using these techniques I will be engaging my target audience with something they can recognise.
