Editing

We started the editing process by looking though all our shots and putting the ones we liked and/or hoped to use onto the timeline as we were pressed for time and did not have the time to use bins. This allowed as to have all the clips and audio files we wanted to use in one place that we could see clearly.

We then chose how we wanted to open the sequence, we choose a clip of the bodyguard that can be seen in the picture above, we wanted to not introduce the bodyguard fully until closer to the death scene as we want the sequence to have a mysterious and unknown feel to it.

From there we trimmed and put the sequence together by following a concept of adhering to genre related convections attached to the genre. The main problems we faced when editing was the audio as lots of clips had back group noise of other people in them as we shot on a gravel car park. This meant that we had to take audio from other clips and string it together in order to keep a clean sound that did not have interference.

After we had put together a continuous timeline of sound that worked alongside the video, we then went on to add titles. For the titles we chose a very formal font that we agreed displayed the same theme as our sequence, we had them in various positions on screen as some interact with the video, for example some line up with the roof of the house.

Then our main task was to find a soundtrack, we had a few options but did not want to overpower the sound effects as well as the audio, we wanted the soundtrack to sit nicely as well as match up with important parts of the video. We decided to go with a copyright free suspenseful soundtrack that we found on youtube. We then used a mp3 converter to download the track and then added it into the sequence.

The next part of the process was to make finalise everything. We went through the whole sequence multiple times looking for imperfections mainly focused on audio. We used a cross fader to adjust the change from audio clip top another as some mad clear un matches. We then went through and adjusted the volume on different audio clips including the soundtrack to make sure you could hear everything we wanted the audience to hear. Finally finding sound effects such as the gunshot and the phone dialling/ringing, we then added these in adding them to the sequence.

We then went into final effect and added the mussel flash to the gun shots as we thought it looked too fake without it; we did this for all three-gunshots. We then used an outliner as seen above to create a flash in the background of the scene to make the whole shot look more authentic.

Finally, we went through and added a grey/blue tint to the whole sequence as we thought the whole thing looked too bright and that doing this would help give a nice tone to the sequence as well as helping to foreshadow what was going to unfold in the opening scene as well as setting it up for the further duration of the film. To do this I used temperature/tint/exposure and contrast as well as some other smaller settings at the levels seen below.

We then had a final watch of the whole sequence to make sure everything was in order and once this was confirmed we were finally finished with the production process of our project.

My favourite part of the editing process was using final effect to add the mussel blast to the gun shots as a found this very interesting as there where so many variables to mess with and was fun to play with to find the desired effect.

Throughout editing there where only a few shots that we left out such as Jason (Dave) nodding in the rear-view mirror as thought that to include this would result in this area of the sequence being too choppy as we wanted the sequence to build suspense but still be smooth and measured and a choppiness would have the opposite effect in this sense.
