What is Genre?
Genre is a category in which films are put into, for the benefit of the consumer as we value choices and genre makes decision making a quick and easy process. Conventions are the factors that determine genre. The genre also benefits the institution as it allows the studio to understand the market within each genre.
What is a sub-genre?
Sub-genre is the categorisation of films within the bigger genre, suggesting a different type of conventions within the film. These give a deeper idea of the tone and theme surrounding the film. They exist because some genres are not as popular and they are genres within the genre making film selection more specific
What is a hybrid genre?
A hybrid genre is 2 or more genres put together in order to attract more audience as it puts the aspects of genres that people like together with another genre allowing people with different interests to come together and watch the same kind of material. This allows the institution to have a bigger audience.
What do we associate with the genres below?:
Western:
We associate a lot of the building blocks of what became modern America with Western films. sometimes referred to as the wild-west it represents the transformation between rural and wilderness-based civilisations and modern society. We expect lots of violence as well as gritty attitudes along with an overwhelming sense of lawlessness

Horror:
Designed to instil fear in the minds of the audience for entertainment as it gives them a sense of adrenaline, with the cliff hang like storylines that gradually develop throughout. There should be a sense of dread, unease, anxiety, or foreboding.
