Editing workshop

At Hurtwood house, the school I am currently attending, we use an editing software called premier pro, this software can be used for many different things such as movies, music videos and more.

When editing it is very important to constantly save your progress regularly as sometimes the system can crash or you can do something that could have a negative impact on your work, a shortcut for saving is using the control key along with the ‘s’ key.

Rushes are the completely unedited video file, they are called rushes as on old film sets the film needed to be rushed off to be developed for the next day of filming, this is so that the crew can see how the film is looking as back then film technology was not as advanced as it currently is. In America these are called daily's, as they take a day to prepare.

Bins are effectively different folders, that allow you to bundle rushes from different sections of a film for example. This helps to organise the footage as for a film there can be thousands of rushes. They are called bins as in the old days of physical film, when scenes where filmed and hung on a string a bin was put around them and the scene was written on the bin to make the post-production process more efficient. To create a new bin on the bottom right of the bottom left box there is an icon listed as new bin.

When selecting clips from the rushes with the desire of using them on the timeline, buy double clicking the clip to populate the top left window then by using the scrubbing tool as seen above by the blue dot. When you have reached the part of the clip where you would like to open press ‘I’ for in, then when it is at the desired length click ‘O’ for out. This can be seen by the grey section over the black clip timeline showing the part of the clip selected.

To clip or shorten a shot you hover the mouse over either end of the clip on the timeline and a red handle will appear, this is called the trim handle and is used to shorten and/or lengthen the clip to its desired size.

There are four sections two the main screen of premier pro, the top left is a preview window of the clips that are selected through the bottom left rushes/log bins section, this area can also change to become control panels. The bottom left is where all of the clips and footage is stored known as the project window. The bottom right is the timeline this is where the clips and audio files are assembled, the product of this can be seen on the top right window.

If you are unsure about what you have done and decide to undo there a few ways to do this, To undo or redo the most recent change, choose Edit > Undo. To undo all changes made since you last saved the project, choose File > Revert.

Below is the clip me and my group edited as a first attempt at editing.
